Warning!! Please read this carefully if you intend to use this product.

ExoShield, just like any other natural oil based deck stain, will self combust if rags are left in a pile after finishing. Heat is generated as the oils dry. We recommend that you dispose of used rags by placing them in a metal can full of water and then taking them to your hazardous waste center. You may also allow them to dry flat in exterior conditions - hang them on a fence, for example. Never store rags wadded up in a pile in your garage or tool shed. If you have questions about self combustion or disposal or rags, please call us - we have personal experience - yes, it really will self combust.

Application Tips

We recommend rolling or brushing an initial coat of ExoShield finish onto the wood project - a 3/8" nap roller works best. The finish should be allowed to soak in for 20 to 30 minutes and then it should be wiped off with a clean cotton or microfiber cloth. Additional coats may be applied if desired. For decking applications, we strongly recommend that finish is applied on the underside as well as the topside of the deck boards. For siding applications, we recommend applying the finish on all sides prior to fastening to the wall. Don't forget to apply end wax to any fresh end cuts with Ipe Seal or Anchor Seal.

For exterior furniture, additional coats may be applied as desired. Wet sanding with 220 or higher grit using ExoShield (not water) will help you achieve a silky smooth finish. ExoShield may also be used on interior wood projects including furniture, dining tables and more. Especially for interior use, progressively higher grits such as 400 - 600 - 800 can be used to achieve that perfect texture. ExoShield wood finishes are safe for indirect food contact after curing for 14 days. Full hardness is achieved after 30 days. ExoShield SHOULD NOT be used on CUTTING BOARDS, SERVING PLATTERS, SALAD BOWLS, OR ON ANY FOOD PREPARATION SURFACES.

After the initial application, maintenance can be done with a simple light coat of ExoShield wiped on and wiped off. Once your wood project has been finished with ExoShield, additional coats will not soak in as deep since the wood is already sealed and protected. However, a light coat of ExoShield will keep your wood clean and provide the best possible appearance.

It is absolutely critical that you do not over-apply ExoShield. MORE is NOT necessarily better - excessive finish on the surface of the wood which cannot be absorbed must be avoided. Over-applied finish must be sanded off and followed by a light reapplication of ExoShield.

Surface Preparation - Cleaners & Brighteners / Pressure Washing

Proper preparation is required for optimal results. In order to correctly apply ExoShield wood finish, the first step is to clean the deck boards bringing the wood back to its original color, and removing all grime, dust, and any mildew that may exist. There are two ways to accomplish this: 1. wood cleaners and brighteners and or 2. pressure washing. And it may be necessary to use both steps for optimal results. The preferred method is to start with a wood cleaner and brightener - depending on results of the chemical cleaning, pressure washing can be an effective final step.

Wood Cleaners & Brighteners

Standard consumer grade exterior wood cleaners are available from both Messmer's and Deckwise. They are a combination of Sodium Percarbonate / Sodium Carbonate Peroxyhydrate and Soda Ash / Sodium Carbonate - when mixed with water, the cleaning solution can be applied to the wood's surface with a garden chemical sprayer. After soaking in for 5-10 minutes, the material should be thoroughly scrubbed with a stiff-bristle broom or brush and then rinsed thoroughly. It may take two to three applications in order to remove several years worth of dirt and mildew, and fully restore the original color of the natural wood.

Most species of high density hardwood contain a high degree of tannins and tannic acid. As the final step before treatment with ExoShield deck stain, we recommend that a wood brightener is applied. Standard consumer grade wood brighteners are also available from both Messmer's and Deckwise. The brightener comes in powdered form again and consists of Oxalic Acid / Oxalic Acid Dihydrate. After applying the cleaner and or brightener, be sure to let the wood dry out completely which will usually take 2-3 days.

Pressure Washing

The final step in preparing most decks for refinishing is to pressure wash in order to clean off dirt and remove any weathering, silvering and or graying. This can be done independently to clean the deck in one step, or the wood can be cleaned and brightened first with chemical cleaners, and subsequently pressure washed. We recommend starting with chemical cleaners in order to avoid more aggressive pressure washing which may damage the wood fibers.

High density woods such as Ipe, Cumaru, Batu / Red Balau, Massaranduba, Angelim Pedra and Tigerwood may be pressure washed but even these high density woods can still be damaged by excessive pressure. Use a fan tip of at least 25 degrees and do not allow the tip to get closer than an inch or so above the surface. Pressure washing can quickly bring these woods back to a fresh and bright appearance and will effectively remove the weathering. Using pressures above 3000 psi should be done very cautiously - an even wider fan tip such as 40 degrees can be used to help speed up the process with higher pressures. A minimum of 2-3 days of drying time after pressure washing is recommended to allow the wood to get back under 15% moisture content.

Softwoods may also be pressure washed but it is very easy to damage the wood fiber. Since most softwoods are not as naturally durable as tropical hardwoods, you may find that particular deck boards are showing signs of decay. Decay can be isolated to certain boards which may contain sap wood - which is never naturally durable - or it could be that the entire deck is beginning to decay. Even light pressure washing can literally destroy deck boards with signs of decay. Use caution with pressure settings and replace any rotten boards.

Durability of Hardwoods & Softwoods - In case you were curious...

Tropical hardwoods such as Ipe, Cumaru, Batu / Red Balau, Massaranduba, Angelim Pedra and Tigerwood are naturally durable and can be expected to last 50 to 100 years as exterior decking. The most durable softwoods such as Redwood and Western Redcedar are durable but any sapwood will begin to show decay within 5 to 10 years. Even the heart wood of these so-called durable softwoods will still only last 15 or 20 years before beginning to decay. It is very difficult to find all heart softwood with the exception of Con-Heart Redwood or Clear All Heart (CAH) Redwood or Western Redcedar - and the cost of these grades has been rising relative to tropical hardwoods. Not all tropical hardwoods are naturally durable - many of the wood species sold as Mahogany, such as Meranti and Cambara are not as durable and may only last 15 to 20 years in exterior decking applications. Look for a warranty of at least 25 years against rot and decay from your wood supplier.


Commercial grade belt sanders can also be used to prepare a deck for refinishing. Unfortunately, weathering often goes fairly deep into the wood fibers and a significant amount of wood needs to sanded off in order to remove the weathering. You can also damage the fasteners used to attach the decking if the original deck was face screwed or nailed. We recommend sanding only as a final step to bring stubborn boards back to original color, after first cleaning and pressure washing. Boards that are slightly warped, cupped or twisted may be flattened by sanding but a large amount of material must be removed to get a flat surface. Handheld random orbital sanders are basically ineffective on high density hardwoods with significant weathering, even using aggressive grits in the 40-60 range. Belt sanders remove material much more quickly and small areas can be sanded with a hand held belt sander. For high density hardwoods only, we recommend using a commercial grade drum floor sander for typical full-sized decks - check out your local tool rental shop to see what might be available. Be sure all fasteners are counter sunk below the surface before sanding.

A Dry Surface is Required

Even when finishing fresh wood with ExoShield, a completely dry surface is required. Do not finish your wood project with ExoShield unless you have had a minimum of 2-3 days of dry weather and do not expect rain within 24-48 hours. If the wood's surface does get wet soon after finishing, you will likely get water spots on the surface which must be sanded out prior to a light refinishing with ExoShield. After finishing, you should avoid contact with the wood's surface for at least 48 hours. ExoShield will take up to two weeks to fully cure to its final hardness. Many projects require some degree of sanding especially if they have aged more than a few years. In addition, if there are areas that have been badly weather-beaten or contain loose fibers, a light sanding using 80-100 grit sandpaper is necessary to smooth out the surface and remove unwanted blemishes.

Finishing a New Deck

We recommend finishing you deck boards on all sides. Finishing just on the top will allow moisture to penetrate at different rates between the top, bottom and sides, and will result in more cupping, warping and twisting of individual deck boards. This is best accomplished by finishing the boards prior to installation. Then as a final step after installation, you can apply a light top coat of ExoShield. If you have access to the underside of your deck, then you may be able to roll on or spray the boards from the bottom side. It will be difficult to get any coverage on the edges of the boards so we do not recommend this technique unless the deck has already been installed and the installer did not treat the back side with ExoShield. Brushing ExoShield between boards in order to seal the edges is really the only effective way to apply the sealer if the deck boards are already installed.


For high density hardwoods such as Ipe, Cumaru & Batu, you should expect to get 600 to 800 SF of coverage per gallon - no, that's not a typo. 600 to 800 SF of coverage can easily be achieved on hardwoods because our ExoShield wood finish is not loaded up with solvents and oils that evaporate quickly. It's simply amazing how different working with ExoShield can be compared to typical exterior wood finishes. Softwood applications will absorb more ExoShield finish than hardwoods so coverage will vary between 400 and 600 SF per gallon, depending on the density and grain characteristics of the particular wood species.
