Designing The Perfect Hidden Clip

Natural wood siding is subject to expansion and contraction in the width of the boards as a result of seasonal changes in humidity in your individual location.

We designed our ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip specifically to allow for this natural swelling and shrinkage in the widths of individual boards after installation. Our clip is stiff enough to hold the gap perfectly during installation and yet flexible enough to allow the wood swell up to 1/8" in width.

Because typical siding boards can swell up to 1/8” in width, we designed the ExoClad Rainscreen QuickClip to compress under high pressure to absorb this expansion. When the wood later dries out, the spring action in the clip will move the boards back into place, centered perfectly, and securely fastened to the side of the structure.

Patented Design - The Only Flexible, Resilient Clip Available

Nova's unique design was created to solve a typical problem with tropical hardwood siding boards - variations in wood moisture content are caused by seasonal changes in temperature and humidity. After hearing of reports in the field of failed hardwood rainscreen systems, we studied the existing clip designs and soon realized that it was possible to have a clip that both created the necessary 3/4" air gap behind the boards AND allowed the boards to move with these changes in humidity. When wood swells due to an increase in moisture it is virtually impossible to stop the expansion.

Installation Notes

Mitered Corners - Over the years, we have had many customers attempt to install siding products with mitered corners. With any natural wood product in exterior conditions, movement, shrinkage, and expansion of boards is typical and should be expected. Even with properly designed rainscreen systems, some cupping in individual boards should be expected especially as weather conditions change from hot and dry to cool and humid. We do not recommend mitered corners unless some degree of imperfection can be tolerated by the final customer. Corner boards are typically a better solution and offer a much more efficient way to handle both outside and inside corners. Mitered corners on walls less than 24" thick are nearly impossible to install without alignment issues.

Brad Nails & Finish Nails - Brad nails and or finish nails should never be used during installation of hardwood siding. Nails do not have the holding ability to prevent hardwood from moving. In addition, nails can stain your hardwood siding.

Warped Boards - Sometimes siding boards will warp and pull away from the structure with such force that even a properly installed siding clip cannot hold it in place. In these rare cases, we recommend screwing and plugging. Be sure to predrill according to the manufacturer's instructions of the screw and plug kit. You must be absolutely certain to be directly over a wall stud when screwing and plugging - screwing only through sheathing will not have enough force to pull the warped board back into place. As you screw into the board, through the 3/4" air gap, and then into the stud, be sure that you don't pull the board back down too low - there is the air gap between the siding and the sheathing and you should be careful not to over-screw the board. We recommend a minimum 3-1/2" long stainless steel screw.
