Nova’s Doju 1x4 (19mm x 90mm) is surfaced four sides with eased edges and graded First Clear. Doju is a close cousin to genuine Ipe, widely traded in Europe for many decades. The heartwood is light to dark olive brown with contrasting yellowish-grey or grey brown tones accompanying it; combined with its straight to very irregular grain and medium to coarse texture, it makes a rich, distinctive deck. Left untreated it will gradually age to a lustrous silver-grey, or it can be oiled to retain its rich golden-brown color.

Doju is amongst the strongest and most resilient natural untreated hardwood materials available today, and one of the most stable hardwoods commonly used for exterior applications — which makes it the right choice for close-to-ground applications and for regions with more variable climates. It is rated as very durable and resistant to brown and white-rot fungi, with exemplary weathering characteristics. Nova offers a 25 Year Decking Warranty on our naturally durable exotic hardwood decking, provided the Installation Guidelines are followed.

To hold the golden-brown color, we recommend a high quality penetrating oil finish with ultraviolet inhibitors such as our own ExoShield. Doju is not sold online — contact Nova for pricing, current availability and lead time for your next Doju project.

Doju Hardwood Species Information

Doju is amongst the strongest and most resilient natural untreated hardwood materials available on the market today. It is also one of the most stable hardwoods commonly used for exterior applications, making it the perfect choice for close-to-ground applications and regions with more variable climates. Rated as very durable and resistant to brown and white-rot fungi, with exemplary weathering characteristics.

Nova’s Doju does not have a similar CITES Appendix 2 listing like its cousin Ipe. Although it has been traded alongside Ipe for decades, the supply of Doju is much more concentrated into the Northeast corner of South America. Our Doju is legally harvested and legally sourced under the US Lacey Act and under the corresponding governmental agency in South America, using stringent environmental guidelines for sustainability.

Grading for Doju Hardwood

First clear is the highest grade available in lumber. No open defects are permitted on one face and material is 100% heartwood. Occasional pin holes, small tight knots and other minor non-structural defects are allowed on the back side and edges.
