Nordic Spruce Forest - Sustainable Forestry in Northern Europe

Thermally Modified Nordic Spruce

Nordic Spruce (Picea abies), also known as Norway Spruce, is one of the most important timber species in Northern Europe. These fast-growing evergreen conifers can reach heights of up to 200 feet and are abundant throughout Norway, Finland, Sweden, the Alps, Carpathian Mountains, and Eastern Europe. For centuries, Nordic Spruce has been prized for its fine, even texture, consistent grain, and exceptional workability.

The pristine forests of Northern Europe where Inari™ spruce is sourced are among the most sustainably managed in the world. PEFC® certification ensures that every board can be traced from forest to finished product, guaranteeing environmental responsibility throughout the entire supply chain. By choosing Inari™, you're not just selecting premium wood - you're supporting sustainable forestry practices that protect these magnificent forests for future generations.

Modifying this fantastic species of timber only makes it better. Color consistency, durabiity, and stability are all massively improved after thermal modification.

The Thermal Modification Process

The thermal modification process that creates Inari™ is a patented three-phase treatment that permanently enhances the wood's properties using only heat and steam - no chemicals, preservatives, or toxic treatments. Wood is heated to temperatures between 180-220°C (356-428°F) while being protected by clean water steam. This process fundamentally changes the wood's cellular structure, reducing its equilibrium moisture content and making it naturally resistant to decay and fungal attack. The result is a Class 2 durability-rated material - equivalent to all-heart Western Red Cedar - with exceptional dimensional stability and a beautiful, consistent caramel brown to amber color that goes all the way through the wood.

Three-Phase Thermal Modification

Phase 1: High-Temperature Drying - The wood is carefully heated while moisture content is reduced to near zero percent. This initial phase prepares the cellular structure for modification.

Phase 2: Thermal Modification - Temperatures are increased to 180-220°C depending on the desired durability class. Steam protects the wood while chemical changes permanently alter its properties. The Thermo-D process used for Inari™ maximizes decay resistance for exterior applications.

Phase 3: Cooling and Conditioning - Temperature is gradually decreased and moisture content is carefully restored to 4-7%. This conditioning phase ensures the wood is stable and ready for machining and installation.

Why Choose Thermally Modified Wood?

Thermally modified wood represents a breakthrough in sustainable building materials. Unlike chemically treated lumber that relies on toxic preservatives, thermal modification achieves superior durability through a completely natural process. The wood is non-toxic, chemical-free, and 100% recyclable at the end of its service life. With less than 2% shrinkage in both radial and tangential directions, Inari™ offers exceptional dimensional stability that dramatically reduces checking, warping, and movement compared to untreated softwoods. The enhanced thermal insulation properties also contribute to improved building energy efficiency.

Sustainability & Environmental Responsibility

For Nova, sustainable development is a core value that guides all our operations. Wood is a renewable natural resource, and all wood products store carbon, making them a key part of the solution to climate change. Inari™ is manufactured using only heat and steam - no chemicals or toxic treatments are used in the process.

PEFC® Certification: The proof of origin certificate guarantees environmental friendliness throughout the entire production and delivery chain. PEFC™ certification is based on independent third-party control and verification.

Recyclable: Because thermally modified wood is non-toxic and chemical-free, it can be recycled just like any other natural timber at the end of its service life.

Carbon Storage: Wood products store carbon throughout their useful life, helping to reduce atmospheric CO2 and combat climate change.

We strongly believe that a better tomorrow is built of wood.

Installation Essentials

Proper installation is critical to the long-term performance of Inari™ products. Fasteners: Use 304 grade stainless steel fasteners for most applications, or 316 stainless steel in marine/coastal environments. Finishing: Apply finish to all sides prior to installation for UV protection. Regular maintenance coats are recommended to prevent graying. Moisture Barrier: Install over a weather-resistant barrier regardless of sheathing type. Board Spacing: Use 1/16" edge-to-edge spacing for 1x4 siding, and 1/8" for 1x6 and wider. Inari™ is incredibly stable with less than 1% movement. Field Cuts: Seal all cuts with end-wax or primer to prevent moisture wicking. For complete installation guidelines, please refer to Nova's Inari™ Installation Guide.
