Ipe (Brazilian Walnut) Decking and Siding
Ipe is the benchmark exterior hardwood. Its cell structure is dense enough to act as a natural deterrent to insects, decay, and mold, and at roughly 3,680 on the Janka scale it is among the hardest woods in commercial use. It also carries a Class A flame-spread rating, the same class as steel, which is why it is specified on commercial boardwalks and rooftop decks as often as on residential projects. The heartwood runs light to dark olive brown with grey-brown tones.
We mill Ipe in First Clear, Select, and Standard-and-Better grades. The line covers S4S eased-edge deck boards from 1x4 through 5/4x6, rainscreen siding in 1x6, structural 2x4 and 2x6 stock, 2x2 balusters, and 4x4 posts.
Compare the other very dense options: Cumaru and Massaranduba.
