4x4 Hardwood Posts

The 4x4 is the post of an exterior hardwood build — deck guardrail posts, fence posts, pergola columns, and the newels a handrail dies into. A post carries load in compression and, at a guardrail, takes a hard lateral push, so both the density and the decay resistance of the species matter: this is the one member that is often near or in the ground, and the one that has to hold a fastener under repeated stress for the life of the deck.
