Nova's Douglas Fir 1x4 is surfaced four sides with eased edges, netting 3/4" x 3-1/2", in our VGX Clear grade — clear, fine vertical grain off old growth logs. This is the board for exposed trim, fascia, window and door casing, built-ins and any run where the grain is the finish. This is some of the nicest material the Pacific Northwest has to offer - a true old growth, fine grain Douglas Fir.

Our Douglas Fir clears are kiln dried for stability, so the material holds its dimension once it is inside and finished. We are happy to arrange final surfacing as required by many of our customers. Prefinishing and custom patterns can be quoted with the order.

Douglas Fir Species Information

Douglas Fir has the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood species. Primarily found in the western US and Canada, Douglas Fir is frequently use for dimension lumber in lower grades, and for interior finish work in upper grades. Douglas Fir clears are renowned for their strength, durability, and ability to stand up to the elements. In addition to its strength, Douglas Fir has rich coloring with the heartwood aging to a dark tan-red color and the sap wood remaining light tan. Vertical grain, clear Douglas Fir is widely considered to be one of the finest materials available for trim, mouldings, doors, windows, exposed beams, ceilings and paneling. Douglas Fir CVG flooring has been used throughout the US since the 1800's and is often found in classic historic homes.

Grading for Douglas Fir

Clear grade material is color matched in most species of wood. This is the highest grade available in flooring items. No open defects are allowed and material is 100% heartwood. No breaks, no splits, no cracks. In tropical flooring, tight knots and burls are typically downgraded from Clear to Select grade.
